Why The Oracle Is Back Online

When I first came to Webb as an eighth grader, The Oracle had been published on the internet for some time. When I became a freshman, the new editor returned The Oracle to a print format. This lasted for three years. I was a partisan of the print format in my first year as editor because it most closely resembled my image of a professional publication and it was the ideal format to showcase the work of such excellent artists as Soyoung Choi. Moreover, I had seen several archival copies of The Oracle from decades ago, and I was inspired to re-introduce some of the historical elements of The Oracle.

However, there were several problems that arose in the last year that could be solved most easily by introducing an online publication. We had to rely on outside sources for printing. We were limited in our use of money and color. The amount of time that layout took caused us to exceed our own deadlines for publication. We could not print frequently. One of my goals had been to make The Oracle more like a real newspaper, and the ability to publish frequently and consistently is tremendously important for anyone who wants to fulfill that goal.

That being said, there is still work to be done. I spent more time coding the website than designing. I apologize if the site is not aesthetically pleasing, but I assure you that improving the design will be a major goal for the next issue. I hope you will enjoy the results of the hard work that The Oracle writers put into delivering this publication.

Thanks,
Minty
